This series includes more than 80 drawings, each approximately 18”x24”, the majority of which were created over the course of one month. One might say they are an intense example of art therapy executed straight from the solar plexus. The subject of the series is my encounter with a psychopathic personality.
Later in 1986 over the course of three days I drew two 3’ x 25’ works in pastels on paper. (There is a slideshow available in gallery.) The widow and collaborator of Harvey Cleckley, author of The Mask Of Sanity, a definitive book on the psychopathic personality, wrote, “Your drawings are amazing.”
An attendant who had worked for eight years in a ward for the criminally insane came across my works without knowing anything about their history and asked to be directed to the artist. Upon meeting me, his first words were, “You’ve seen it, you’ve seen it when the mask slips. I’ve worked on a secured ward for eight years and in all that time, I caught it only twice for seconds.”
